SLED

Page history last edited by Sue Sherif 15 years, 3 months ago

SLED (http://sled.alaska.edu ) is a free resource for all Alaskans, including your students, teachers, and parents, and for non-Alaskans who are looking for accurate and authentic information about the 49th state and its history, cultures, government, and other information.  It was developed by the Alaska State Library and the University of Alaska to be a directory of high quality websites about Alaska and related subjects. For the convenience of small libraries and those who are not able to use libraries in person, there is also a small general reference section. To learn more about SLED, try it out.  Explore some of the menus or try searching it with the Google search box on the SLED home page.

SLED is also the doorway to the Alaska Digital Pipeline, a different kind of electronic resource that is a collection of information and services licensed to Alaska libraries and their users that require passwords or authentication. The Digital Pipeline is a rich resource that is at the top of the SLED homepage and is open to Alaskans at their libraries, schools, and homes, but not available to those outside the state.

Notice on the left side of the SLED main page there are two valuable resources for your students:

  1. The Alaska Digital Archives: a great collection of historic photos, short audio interviews and films, scrapbooks, animations, and much, much more on the themes of Alaska Native Cultures and The Road to Statehood.
  2. Live Homework Help: a service that the Alaska State Library and the University of Alaska provides to offer live online homework help Alaska students from elementary school to beginning college-level seven days a week from 1 PM to 10 PM.
